What is comment-to-DM on Instagram? The 'comment LINK' trick, explained

Comment-to-DM is an Instagram automation that sends someone a direct message the moment they comment a specific word on your post. When a creator says "comment LINK and I'll DM it to you," a tool connected to their account is watching for that word and replies privately with the link, usually within seconds. It runs on an official Meta feature called private replies, which is why it is allowed and not treated as spam.

In one line: a viewer comments a keyword, Instagram's official API lets the creator's tool send that person one private DM in response, and the DM carries whatever was promised: a link, a guide, a code, or a signup.

How does comment-to-DM work?

Comment-to-DM works by matching a keyword in a comment and answering it with a private message through Instagram's API. The creator sets it up once per post. After that, every matching comment gets its own DM without the creator touching their phone.

Here is what it looks like from the viewer's side:

  1. They watch a Reel where the creator says "comment RECIPE for the full recipe."
  2. They type RECIPE in the comments.
  3. A few seconds later, a DM from the creator shows up with the recipe link.
  4. If they reply to that DM, it becomes a normal conversation with the creator.

And from the creator's side:

  1. They connect their Instagram professional account to an auto-reply tool through Instagram's own login.
  2. They choose a keyword, like RECIPE, and pick which post or Reel it applies to.
  3. They write the DM, including the link or file they want to send.
  4. They publish the post with a clear call to action, then let the tool answer comments as they arrive.

Nobody is sitting there copying and pasting links. That is the whole appeal: a post with 400 keyword comments gets 400 DMs, whether the creator is awake or not.

What is it called? Comment-to-DM, comment auto reply, and other names

The same move goes by several names, and they all describe the same thing. You will see:

  • Comment-to-DM, the most common name among tools and creators.
  • Comment auto reply or auto-reply to comments with a DM.
  • Keyword auto-DM or keyword trigger, because a specific word sets it off.
  • "Comment for link" or "comment LINK", named after the call to action itself.
  • Private replies, which is Meta's own technical name for the underlying API feature.

If you have been searching "how do people send links when you comment," this is the answer. It is one feature with five names.

Why is comment-to-DM allowed on Instagram?

Comment-to-DM is allowed because the viewer starts the conversation. Meta permits automated DMs only in response to something the user did first, like commenting, replying to a Story, mentioning you, or messaging you. A keyword comment counts, so the DM that follows is a reply, not cold outreach.

The specific feature is called private replies. Under Meta's rules, a business or creator account can send one private message in response to each comment, and it has to be sent within 7 days of that comment. That is it. No follow-up blasts, no messaging people who never interacted with you.

This is the line between automation and spam. Cold or mass messaging, where you DM people who never asked, is prohibited and is what actually gets accounts restricted. Comment-to-DM is the opposite: every message is an answer to a request. If you want the full picture on what gets accounts in trouble, see will Instagram ban you for auto-DM.

Once the viewer replies to your DM, a separate rule applies. Meta opens a 24-hour conversation window after a user messages you, during which you can keep talking. Do not mix the two up: the comment reply is one message within 7 days, the conversation window is 24 hours after they write to you.

What do you need to set up comment-to-DM?

You need four things: an Instagram professional account, a comment-to-DM tool, a keyword, and something to send. None of them require a computer or technical skill.

A professional account. Instagram's API only works with Business or Creator accounts. Personal accounts cannot use comment-to-DM at all. Switching is free, takes about two minutes in Settings, and you keep your username, followers, and posts.

A tool. Comment-to-DM runs through a third-party tool that connects to your account using Instagram's official API. ManyChat is the best-known one. Comment Auto Reply is an iOS app built to do just this one job from your phone, and it is currently in early access with a waitlist. Whatever you pick, connect through Instagram's official login. If a tool asks for your Instagram password directly, walk away.

A keyword. One short, uncommon word works best, something people would not type by accident. LINK, GUIDE, and RECIPE are classic for a reason. There is a full breakdown of what makes a good one in comment-to-DM keywords.

Something to send. A link, a file, a code, a signup page. The DM is capped at 1,000 characters, which is plenty for a warm line, the link, and a short note on what to do next.

The full step-by-step setup is in how to auto-reply to Instagram comments.

What is comment-to-DM used for?

Comment-to-DM is used to hand people something specific the moment they ask for it. The most common uses are sending a link, delivering a lead magnet, giving out a discount code, and collecting waitlist signups. Each example below is hypothetical.

Sending a link. A food creator posts a 30-second soup Reel and says "comment SOUP for the recipe." Everyone who comments gets the blog post link in their DMs, instead of being told to dig through a link in bio.

A lead magnet. A fitness coach posts a carousel on meal prep and offers a free one-page grocery checklist. Commenters type GUIDE and receive the PDF link, and the coach's DM asks if they want the weekly email too.

A discount code. A small candle shop posts a new scent and says "comment GLOW for 15% off this week." The DM contains the code and a link straight to the product page.

A waitlist signup. A course creator teasing a launch says "comment WAITLIST to get in first." The DM links to the signup form, so interest from the post turns into a list they can email on launch day.

The pattern is the same every time. The viewer raises their hand in public, and the payoff arrives in private.

What are the limits of comment-to-DM?

The main limits come from Meta, not from any particular tool, so every compliant tool shares them. Knowing them up front saves you from a few surprises.

One reply per comment. Each comment gets exactly one private reply. You cannot send a second automated DM off the same comment, and you cannot drip a sequence from it. If the viewer answers, the 24-hour conversation window gives you room to keep talking.

Seven days. The private reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment. In practice a tool answers in seconds, but if a tool is disconnected for over a week, those older comments can no longer be answered.

Personal accounts are out. No professional account, no API access, no comment-to-DM. This is the most common reason it "doesn't work" for someone.

Live is during broadcast only. Comments on an Instagram Live can only get a private reply while the Live is still going. Once it ends, that chance is gone.

Pacing on big posts. Meta caps private-reply API calls at 750 per hour per account. Around 200 automated DMs an hour is widely cited as safe practice, though that is not a published Meta limit. If a Reel blows up, replies should go out in a steady queue rather than all at once. The details are in Instagram DM limits.

One more honest note: comment-to-DM is a delivery mechanism, not a growth hack. Its job is making sure the people who asked actually get the thing.

How much does comment-to-DM cost?

Comment-to-DM can cost nothing to start, because several tools have free tiers. What you pay after that depends on how the tool bills, and that difference matters more than the headline price.

There are two broad models. ManyChat bills per active contact, meaning each person you interact with in a month counts against your plan, with overage charges above the cap. Its free tier now covers 25 contacts. That model gets expensive exactly when a post takes off, because every new commenter is a new contact. Flat-rate tools charge a set monthly price for a set number of DMs, so a viral Reel does not change your bill. Comment Auto Reply uses the flat model, with a free plan that includes comment-to-DM.

Free tiers vary a lot in what they actually include, and some leave comment-to-DM out of the free plan entirely. There is a side-by-side in free Instagram auto-DM tools compared, and our own numbers are on the pricing page.

Quick answers

What does "comment LINK and I'll DM you" mean?

It means the creator is using comment-to-DM. If you comment the word LINK on that post, an automation connected to their account sends you a direct message with the link, usually within seconds.

Is comment-to-DM against Instagram's rules?

No. It runs on Meta's official private replies feature, which allows one DM per comment within 7 days. Because the viewer commented first, the message is a reply, not unsolicited outreach.

Can I use comment-to-DM with a personal Instagram account?

No. The API behind it only works with professional accounts, either Business or Creator. Switching is free and takes about two minutes.

Does comment-to-DM work on Reels and Stories?

Yes. It works on posts, carousels, Reels, and ad posts. Story replies work too, as a separate trigger, and Live comments can be answered only while the broadcast is running.

Can I send more than one DM per comment?

Not automatically. Meta allows one private reply per comment. If the person replies to your DM, a 24-hour conversation window opens and you can keep the conversation going.

Is there a free way to do comment-to-DM?

Yes, several tools have free tiers, though the limits differ widely. Check whether comment-to-DM is included on the free plan, and how many DMs or contacts it covers before you commit.
